Non-Newtonian Fluid!
aka Ooze

What is both a liquid AND a solid? A Non-Newtonian Fluid, also known as an Ooblek Slime or an Ooze.

In this experiment, we mix together household ingredients to make some of our own!

Making a Non-Newtonian Fluid!

Materials

  • 1/2 Cup of Water

  • 1 Cup of Dry Corn Starch

  • Food Colouring (optional)

  • Mixing Bowl

Procedure

  1. Put the Corn Starch into the bowl.

  2. If you’d like to, add food colouring of your choice to make the Ooze Unique. Two or three drops will be enough. Mix this in.

  3. Add water slowly, a little at a time, and mix together with your fingers as you go.

  4. When you’ve found the right ratio between the ingredients, the ooze should act like a liquid when you slowly stir it but a solid if you hit it with your finger or a spoon.

  5. You might need to add more corn starch if it’s splashy when you hit it or more water if it becomes dry. Keep balancing until it’s just right.

  6. When you’re disposing of the ooze, don’t put it down the sink, this will damage your pipes! Put it in a bag, tie it, and put it in your regular garbage.

This experiment is great for beginners and can be done with household ingredients. Special disposal instructions should be followed.
