Exploring Cohesion!

Using a simple demonstration, we drop water on a coin and watch as cohesion brings all the molecules together to make one big droplet!

Surface tension takes the demonstration a step further by allowing us to stack the drops upwards.

Demonstrating Cohesion!

Materials

  • Water

  • Dropper

  • Coin - a dime or a penny work great

Procedure

  1. Using your dropper, put a drop of water on the coin.

  2. Now drop another droplet of water on the coin and observe what happens to the two.

  3. See how many drops can you fit on the coin before the surface tension breaks!

This experiment is great for Beginner Explorers

and uses household items. Scissors are required

for cutting the glider from the template.
